Greeting Introduction Location

Professor Kwang Yeom Kim.
Welcome to the Rock Mechanics and Underground Energy (ROMUE) laboratory at Korea Maritime and Ocean University. We are delighted that you are interested on our work. You can find us at the main campus, located in Jodo Island (Busan), where you can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere and great sea views.

There has never been a more important time to study rock mechanics and geomechanics. The current national construction projects as well as various energy alternatives require a good understanding of rock mechanics in order to secure the stability and safety not only during construction, but also during the lifetime of the projects. On the other hand, technology advancements in testing equipment as well as the increase on computing power are paving the way towards better characterization of rock masses and underground reservoirs, with a continual development and exploration of technologies and techniques that increase the accuracy and efficiency.

Our laboratory is a community of staff and students with great passion for their research and aim to produce outstanding outcomes. The research projects at ROMUE cover a large range from image-based Deep Learning applications to rock and rock mass characterization, to the study of fault activation mechanisms, as well as the implementation of X-ray CT technology on the characterization of diverse construction materials for underground facilities, among others.

Again, I give you a warm welcome to the ROMUE lab at KMOU.
